10 Romantasy BookTok Series that are 100% Worth the Hype
Books that the internet got right, in no particular order (except the last one)
All of these titles and more can be found on my Amazon Storefront
The Shepard King by: Rachel Gillig
One Dark Window is part of The Shepard King duology by Rachel Gillig. Spooky vibes, a unique magic system, and an ancient monster possession make this story a must read. The writing in this novel is gorgeous and almost like reading a poem. In the Romantasy world, we’re used to reading similar versions of the same story over and over. One Dark Window is not that.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by: Sarah J. Maas
You can’t mention BookTok and not talk about Sarah J. Maas. She is a legend with a well-earned gigantic following. In an effort to diversify this list, I’ll limit SJM to one spot but ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, and Crescent City have the reading community in a chokehold. Everyone says that the first book is slow and it gets better from there. This was one of the first Romantasy books that I read so I don’t remember thinking that, I may feel differently if I was reading it today. Feyre is an illiterate, destitute, teenager living in a shack with her two sisters and traumatized father. She is out hunting one day and kills the wrong animal. When a fae shows up demanding justice, she finds herself trapped in an unfamiliar world full of magic.
Crowns of Nyaxia by: Carissa Broadbent
Carissa Broadbent is one of my favorite Romantasy authors of all time. The Daughter of No Worlds Series was an absolute masterpiece as is Serpent and the Wings of Night. This is a finished duology with more books coming in the same universe, I LOVE that. I think so few stories require 5-8 books to get through. I adore when authors do stand alones or duologies within the same universe. This book has you following Oraya, a human living in a world of vampires. She was adopted at a young age by a powerful vampire king and is now on a quest to prove herself in a world that would sooner see her dead than throned. It’s *chef’s kiss*.
Hades x Persephone Saga by Scarlett St. Clair
At the time of this writing, the series is on a major cliffhanger. The fourth book comes out on March 12, 2024. There are two parallel series (which makes the Amazon series page a little confusing) This one is from Persephone’s perspective and includes the following:
A Touch of Darkness
A Touch of Ruin
A Touch of Malice
A Touch of Chaos (Release Date: March 12, 2024)
I’m not going to lie, I haven’t read the Hades saga which is the rest of the POVs. I’m planning to in March to prep for A Touch of Chaos but I listed them below:
A Game of Fate
A Game of Retribution
A Game of Gods
These books are spicy like they crawled out of a jalapeno and into your kindle. The plot plots and the characters are dynamic and captivating.
Gods and Monsters by: Amber V. Nicole
This may be the only time I will ever say this, the second book in this series might be even better than the first. This is another unfinished romantasy series. If you’re heart can’t handle that, you may want to wait until the third book comes out on May 28, 2024. That being said, the books really do have their own plot within the larger story. I found myself not wanting to leave the world at the end of the second book but I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger exactly. This is also a rare romantasy where the FMC isn’t an actual child. She’s a 1,000 year old badass and she knows it. It’s a refreshing change of pace.
Kingdom of the Wicked by: Kerri Maniscalco
Ok, hear me out. Think of the Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy as a pregame for the main event. Throne of the Fallen is a work of Romantasy art but you do need to get through KOW to understand what’s going on. It’s YA (Throne of the Fallen is adult) so the spice is minimal but the plot plots hard. You follow Emilia as she processes her sister’s murder. She makes some questionable decisions that put her face-to-face with a prince of hell and a Romantasy quest for vengeance ensues.
Lightlark by: Alex Aster
I was floored in such a good way by this story. This is a YA story so the spice on this one is minimal BUT the plot makes it 100% worth the read. I don’t typically read Romantasy expecting huge plot twists but this one had my jaw on the floor. The sequel is just as good. The story is about the island of Lightlark that, due to a curse, only appears every 100 years. At that time, the kingdoms compete for a break from their unique curses. Isla was sheltered in her kingdom in order to protect her bloodline. As she begins coming out of her shell, she realizes that not is all as it appears.
The Lochlann Feuds by: Robin D. Mahle and Elle Madison
So rarely do I find a Romantasy story that makes me laugh. In fact, I can’t think of another one off the top of my head. I’m not sure if it’s the two authors of it all but the writing is so smart and quirky. I love love loved this series. It kicks off with Rowan and her cousin getting trapped and lost in caves that lead to a neighboring kingdom. How did they get themselves into this little predicament? They were buying liquor as a present for Rowan’s sister. Once they are good and lost, they naturally drink said liquor which is about the time that they are captured by the neighboring kingdom.
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
You know when a book is so good that you remember when and where you read it? July 2 in the car on the way to the beach. I read this on my kindle but have since seen the hard copies and B&N and they are GORGEOUS. I didn’t expect to have this many YA series on this list but this one is such a quick read with fun banter, I couldn’t leave it out. Alosa is sent on a mission to retrieve a map for her father when she is captured by rival pirates. Her world begins to unravel and her eyes start to open to the many secrets that have been kept from her.
Fourth Wing by: Rebecca Yarros
It feels like BookTok rode the coattails of Fourth Wing and grew the audience to what we know it as today. For that reason, I can’t leave it off the list. For personal reasons, I put it last on purpose. I have beef with Iron Flame. I think if I read all of them back-to-back once the next one comes out (whenever that is), maybe I wouldn’t be so salty but the cliffhanger at the end of Iron Flame should be illegal. This must be what people who read Throne of Glass in real time felt like.
I made a list on my Amazon Storefront with all of these titles on it:
